Aluminum Angles: What Size is Right for You?

From DIY to large-scale construction, aluminum angles can be an ideal product for ensuring strength and durability in your applications. But which aluminum angle size is correct for your project?
Let’s compare the different sizes to help you determine which is the right fit for your next project.
What is an aluminum angle?
First things first, aluminum angle products consist of two legs that form a 90-degree angle. These legs can either be equal or unequal lengths. The strength of these products makes them ideal for structural and general engineering applications.
Which aluminum angle is best?
Consider the weight: It is advised to consider the weight and load-bearing requirements of your application when choosing the right aluminum angle size. Larger sized aluminum angles can support more weight, but also may require specialized tools and equipment.
Consider the thickness: While this discussion is on size, thickness should be another primary consideration in your application. For instance, for applications that are exposed to elements a thicker angle may be best due to the fact it would take longer to decompose than a thinner angle.
Considered the shape of the corner: Another distinguishing characteristic of angles is the shape of the corner. Structural angles (American Standard) have rounded corners on the inside radius. These are commonly available in grade 6061.
Sharp corner angles (as the name implies) have a sharp corner on the inside radius and are commonly available in 6063.
While there are exceptions to the shape and alloy, generally 6061 is the grade used for most structural aluminum angles and 6063 is grade used for architectural aluminum angles due to its high machinability.
Comparing aluminum angle sizes
1/2" x 1/2" Aluminum Angle
Are you working on a lightweight application or small DIY project? A 1/2" x 1/2" aluminum angle may be the way to go. This is one of the smallest sizes of aluminum angle available and provides strength and versatility.
3/4" x 3/4" Aluminum Angle
Is your project heavier construction like framing or support structures? Then you may need to go slightly larger and choose a 3/4" x 3/4" aluminum angle.
1" x 1" Aluminum Angle
Going further up the project scale, a 1” x 1” aluminum angle can be a good choice for heavy-duty construction projects that necessitate sturdy and durable material. Think of support structures, bracing, and framing when considering the use of a 1" x 1" aluminum angle.
1-1/2" x 1-1/2" Aluminum Angle
Bridges, platforms, and other larger-scale heavy-duty construction projects will require an aluminum angle that is both strong and resistant to corrosion.
2" x 2" Aluminum Angle
A 2" x 2" aluminum angle is also commonly used on heavy-duty construction projects that require maximum strength and durability.
